Phoronix: Intel SVT-AV1 0.8.2 Released With Many Significant AV1 Encoder/Decoder Improvements

Intel's open-source SVT-AV1 encoder/decoder for AV1 content continues becoming quite featureful while being extremely performant. Out today is SVT-AV1 0.8.2 with more significant work not only on the encoder side but also decoder...

You know what would be a very interesting article, to see the performance difference between a binary built with only pure C vs how much the AVX/AVX-512 optimizations add.

Im not really into decoder/encoder. Is this also used to decode netflix in browser? If not ist there any possibilty to set which decoder i prefer?

No, both Chrome and Firefox (and derivatives) use dav1d to decode av1 and you cannot change it without recompiling your browser. As a end-user I don't see any reason to do it through.

Any browser you use is probably going to use dav1d, which is BSD-licensed. It's the most efficient AV1 decoder out there for most things.

Why would you want to use something else?

Im using Clear Linux. Media codecs and Clear Linux can be still troublesome e.g. https://github.com/clearlinux/distribution/issues/993 https://github.com/clearlinux/distribution/issues/429

But SVT-AV1 is already shipped with this bundle https://clearlinux.org/software/bundle/svt-av1
Therefore it might have better chances to be implemented without having huge difficulties.

dav1d is bundled by the browsers directly.

God bless the Assembly language and the Assembly developers! Fortunately, there are still competent programmers in this world.🙏🏻
