Super excited HDR is finally coming to Linux. I've had a couple Windows HTPCs with HDR TVs since 2017. It's been amazing how HDR turns off the backlight for black colorspace unlike SDR. Makes it sooo much easier on my eyes day or night.

There are so many movies released with HDR and the new TVs will be great for them.
None of those streaming services will play even 720p on GNU/Linux desktops, leave alone 1080p, 4K and HDR. Youtube and a few other services like it are the only ones who'll play HDR.

Also, I'm wondering about DisplayPort , it looks like that doesn't require special hardware, so HDR should work on that with no caveats.

Currently no major windowing systems support HDR on Linux and that is not likely to change any time soon as far as I understand it. X would be piles of work. Weston support makes more sense, but there is no consensus on who (app or compositor) should manage the tone mapping and color space conversion.
