Phoronix: Intel Readies Another Big Graphics Driver Push With Linux 5.5 - Lots For Tigerlake/Gen12

While just one week past the Linux 5.4 merge window cut-off and now with XDC 2019 out of the day, Intel's open-source graphics driver team sent in their first batch of new material they will be targeting for the Linux 5.5 cycle...

12 bit sure has my interest. Lots of good stuff in there.

New chips from intel that aren't still based on Skylake?? Woah, this is news!

I have a question. Would it be wise to have 10-bit math support in future processors or not? (for 10-bit video processing)

That doesn't make any sense, no.

If you care about doing the processing optimally, you're going to be using an ASIC, and it's certainly never going to touch the CPU at all.

Are there any ASICs or IP cores for:
            - AV1
            - ProRes
            - H.264 and H.265 4:4:4/RGB?

If the answer is that there's not enough commercial interest for those to exist, then the question becomes why you think there's enough to add special extensions into general purpose processors.

Software decoding of future unsupported formats.

We already have that, though. With regular general purpose CPUs.

It's not clear what 10-bit math instructions you are even asking for. Most of the speedups seem to be by using SIMD instructions (AVX, etc.) where you just pack all the values together in 1 larger register anyway, and then do the same work across lots of different pixels/rgb values at once.
