Phoronix: Intel Has Quietly Been Working On A New Gallium3D Driver Being Called "Iris"

After resisting Gallium3D for the past decade with a preference on continuing to maintain their "i965" Mesa classic driver and all they've invested into its compiler stack and more, it seems times are changing as the open-source Intel team has been starting up development of a modern Gallium3D driver...

8 months is also right around the time that Raja Koduri joined Intel...

Great, although kinda a bit late at this point now with all those DX->Vulkan wrappers.

"Iris"? Back in the 90's OpenGL was created, based upon IrisGL...

Not entirely. RadeonSI is still based on the Gallium architecture, but it -- and other Gallium drivers -- have been working on moving away from (or complementing) TGSI as the Gallium intermediate representation with supporting NIR. Iris is also focusing on NIR as the preferred IR.

There's still WebGL and years of legacy OpenGL for years to come.

Intel call their graphics Intel HD Graphics. For the high-performance part, they call it Intel Iris Graphics and Intel Iris Pro Graphics.

Which hardware is the "Gen 9"? Is that the Intel UHD 620?

Also, will this new driver only work with the Intel Iris graphics, or others as well?

                  Skylake / Kabylake / Coffeelake / Whiskeylake.

Yes, it should work with HD/UHD Graphics including the 620. Iris is just their branding reserved for their high-end parts.
