  • Intermittent hang on booting, fglrx 13.25.5, ubuntu 14.04, 3.19 Kernel, XFX HD6870

    Hi All,

I have suffered from an intermittent hang on booting or resuming my desktop ever since I built it. Now having a bit more time on my hands, I would like to debug it!

Often when I start the machine, after going through GRUB and booting the kernel, the machine hangs. This can take the form of either a purely black screen or with some graphics anomalies. I have had to resort to rebooting the machine, and it often takes multiple attempts to successfully boot.

I haven't found much information about this fault, except perhaps here, though removing the splash screen as they suggest hasn't helped. I have also turned KMS off with the bootoption "radeon.modeset=0".

I believe that the failure occurs on trying to start the X server. I am currently comparing logs from good boots versus logs from bad boots, and have seen one (possibly interesting) difference in the timings in the Xorg.0.log:

    Good boot: Full Log here

I can also see from the lightdm logs that lightdm is stuck waiting for a signal from the X server.

There is a big difference in the time between the returns from the calls ukiOpenDevice and ukiOpenByBusid for the two logs. I don't believe I can get the source for these anywhere, so I haven't been able to take a look at them to see what's going on. Are these part of the proprietary AMD Drivers? Does this imply some hardware issue?

At this point I am a bit stumped. Any suggestions about where to look next would be very welcome. If I have left any information out, just let me know and I'll update this accordingly.
