When you look at the pure IPC Ryzen shows mostly the same in single threading performance like Intel while it's sometimes faster than a 6950X in multi threading scenarios.
So with software and components that take account of the downsides of the architecture the potential is bigger than those of comparable Intel products, even in games when you compare processors by their price.
