Phoronix: Imagination Unveils "Warrior P-Class" Processor

Imagination Technologies, a name notorious amongst Linux users largely over the company's shoddy Linux driver support for their PowerVR graphics cores, unveiled a new processor core today. Announced today in London was Imagination's first MIPS "Warrior P-Class" CPU core...

They should have gone right to 64bit honestly. That would have given them the initial PR boost they will need. Otherwise, meh. The GPU will be next to useless unless they do something dramatic.

MIPS already has 64 bit CPUs on the market. Just in this particular Warrior P-Class, a 32 bit design is launched first.

any place to buy one for desktop use now that is reasonably priced and reasonably performant? Answer: nope, not really available. And no, buying a 10+ year old sgi station doesn't fit that bill.

Of course you can buy more modern and affordable 64 bit MIPS systems than SGI stations.

Lemote Yeelong 8133 Notebook, 1 GHz Loongson 3A quad core, 13.3" 1366x768 screen, on sale for 540 EUR+VAT in Europe.
This is somewhat worse price/performance than x86 based notebooks but not totally unreasonable given the niche market it is in.

You don't understand. 64-bit arch is not silver bullet in such energy conscious design. As said, 64-bit models will come out, but there will be niche for beefed-up 32-bit models within some memory/speed/power consumption constraints.
