I thought the issue was that the 3D driver for the Mali GPU in the Exonys 5250 SoC contains code licensed from third parties (like all other GPU drivers), and therefore Samsung can't open source the code since it isn't "theirs". Is that not the issue?

    just saying samsung
I'm seriously considering just buying it and hoping for the best. This looks like the best ARM note/netbook out there right now. I would have liked a longer battery life, but hey, you can't have everything.

The reason I haven't bought it yet is that I know - from reading these forums - how much of a pain in the ass these proprietary drivers can be. I will put Ubuntu on the device the first day I buy it, of course. Video decoding acceleration is a must - I don't think the CPU alone can handle HD video, or at least it would completely drain the battery - and 2D acceleration is as well. I think I could live without 3D (I'm not sure how much the desktop experience depends on 3D drivers though).
