I believe that you people are freaking out for no good reason.

What it looks like to me.... is that it makes it possible to run the media accelerator OUTSIDE of the TC scheme. This would allow AMD to provide full media accelerator programming documentation without compromising TC. In fact not only that, but this scheme could actually make it possible to run licensed media within an open operating system without having to defeat the DRM scheme.

Arm provides a range of security IP products designed to protect against a variety of different attacks, even physical attacks.

But whenever I hear DRM, I get pissed the fuck off.

      Fuck Hollywood, fuck DRM!
      Its like a DRM-off-switch.

Poor AMD is stuck with Bulldozer-derived chips until 2015.

uhm... no. It is DRM embedded into all of AMD's CPUs. In other words there will be a part of the AMD cpu that runs it's own code and can override the user's decisions based on what the MAFIAA dictates is acceptable or what SOPA law Congress decides to pass. It's control taken away from the user and put in the hands of a 3rd party.

AMD has gone to the dark side.

They already HAVE DRM built into every GPU!!!
The currently built in DRM ***CAN'T BE TURNED OFF***, which is why we don't have programming docs for UVD.
What they are adding does NOT IN ANY WAY override the user's decisions, UNLESS the user decides to use DRM infested crap. It is DORMANT unless you activate it.

Don't like it? Don't activate it!

That seems like more freedom to me than what we have right now.

And what's wrong with that? Nothing wrong with them, bad rep is created by worthless benchmarks. Build software to take advantage of the new architecture, and it will make intel look foolish.

Surely by now _someone_ would have made such bulldozer-optimized software? I haven't seen any.

I dont know about normal Programms but by games where it often got tested, its because nearly no company invest any money to make games fast under linux, so it would be stupid anywhay because 99% of the games are 1 to 1 ports from consoles so bulldozer or intel or whatever is fast enough for that 5 year old crap games that need 256mb ram.

This is the one thing I don't like about Linux... the rampant paranoia. It's embarrassing. What's worse, the original poster was attempting to explain how this could be a fantastic development for Linux users, but we get responses like this instead.
