I know it's technically better and the reasons for that. It's just that the vast majority of the games I play don't even get my 7800X3D to 50% usage. One or two cores might go to 70 or 80%, but that's it. Some games like Civ and Stellaris will make a single core go higher than that, but those are outliers and games where I'm also not FPS bound.

My 5 to 50% CPU usage becoming 4 to 45% still leaves me with a GPU maxed out. From that perspective I could spend my gaming money more wisely.

I'm not saying the 9800X3D is a bad CPU. It's just not that worthwhile of an upgrade if you already have a 7800X3D and you're not CPU bound. If I could afford a 4090 or a 7900 XTX, if I had one of the best GPUs in the world instead of my 6700 XT, then I could utilize the 9800X3D.

Yay! Let AMD fans again celebrate how competitive Intel's ARL has turned out to be. Maybe now you'll realize you don't want any one vendor to trump everyone else because corporations are not your friends, they will start gouging as soon as they can.
I am probably confused and reading this wrong so correct me if I am.. But since the 5800x in 2020 hasn't Intel and AMD been releasing their competing 8 core chips at around $450?

What also worries me is this 120W TDP. My 5950x has just 105W TDP stock, and cutting it down to around ~88W (120PPT) doesn't really change performance (at least with curve optimizer enabled). It consumes roughly 5W per core (80-90W for 16 cores, rest goes to SoC, memory controller handling 128GB RAM etc) at 100% utilization. It is air cooled, and even passively cooled under light load.

These new 9000 parts seem to really push power consumption up, and from what I saw cutting it down brings considerable performance decrease (at least for 9950x which is really making use of 170W TDP). This is 8 core part, cutting edge 4nm process, and with 120TDP... I don't like the direction it goes...

The "great for linux creators cpu" referenced here is an 8 core...

            I'd like a 9600x3d.

That's what I was wondering... it sure isn't Blender artists because dGPUs CUDA/One/HIP will blow away any CPU-only process unless it's a very old dGPU.

If there's one thing I've learned from building PCs over the last 3 decades, it's that you should never upgrade that soon. You'll be disappointed at the money you spent.
Now, if your computer is 4 or more years old, then that's a different story.

I went from Core2Quad to Westmere to Zen 2 to Zen 4. Q6600 (10yrs) to dual x5680 (~5yrs) to 4650G (~2yrs) to 7800X3D (~1yr). Zen 2 to 4 was the fastest upgrade I've ever done and I only did it because it was a reactionary buy due to the PS5/PSN having a price increase. Sony, and finding a 7800X3D for $330 after tax, made my decision to say fuck it to console gaming going forward so I spent my PS5 savings on AM4 to AM5.

I don't run many games, but I think it is a good thing to compete with Intel on the game performance.

If there were no competition, there would not be any performance gains whatsoever.

Let us all celebrate there are more than one company producing CPU:s to all of us.

You know, people who create stuff... on Linux.
I was making an elaborate ASCII art image the other day, and I was like, "This CPU runs way too hot and won't turbo boost enough." It was like AMD read our collective mind, man!
