The base price of the Mac mini is compelling, the price if you want more than 8GB of RAM or 256GB of storage is not.
Compared to miniPCs in general, it's still pretty expensive. About twice the price of the equivalent in x86_64, I'd say (at least for the cheaper Mac mini).

If you have one (doubt that you would get them used, and cheap) and want to try it out, I have published some bootable images for the dev kit that bring up a preinstalled Ubuntu desktop. The newer ones like Ubuntu_Desktop_24.04_x1e_6.11rc_v6.img.xz are also bootable on some X1 laptops. Development is done in this repo, some information can be found in the discussions and wiki. Working on documenting more.

Although I have a Mini for arm64 development. I'd still prefer to support a vendor that isn't completely closed and undocumented.

I think the declining values is more because Apple products are no longer repairable/upgradable. Thus SSD flash chips are irretrievably wearing out. The average techie can't replace surface mounted components (SMDs). I don't want a used Apple anything because I really don't know how long those storage chips have left. It could be years from just light use, or months from serious abuse. Take it from someone familiar with the new hardware. Don't buy used Apple beyond the point where they started soldering everything to the main board unless you have a surface mount repair station and the expertise to use it.

Dev kits are almost always very expensive for the given hardware, but this thing actually wasn't a terrible deal when it launched at $600. Apple wants $200 to upgrade a Mac Mini to 512GB of storage and a whopping $400 to upgrade to 24GB of RAM putting that unit at $1200. If this dev kit had a newer Qualcomm / NUVIA SOC it would have really been a comparative bargain.
