Phoronix: AMD To Provide Update On Long-Term Strategy For Open-Source Firmware

Next month AMD will be providing an update on their long-term strategy for open-source firmware. Central to their open-source firmware plans is their OpenSIL effort that remains in development for eventually replacing AGESA on future generations of Ryzen and EPYC platforms...

    Nothing about GPUs?

So this is only for the Epyc server CPUs to appease big tech. Us normal users with consumer-grade hardware get no open source firmware. 😢

AMD has always been a top down kind of company. They design high end server and HPC components and then scale that down to fit consumer components. So if they release server or HPC tech with this, then consumer products based on that tech will also have this.

        AMD scales down, not up....

Makes sense if you think that someone must pay the bills.. and let's be real, consumer market does not have as much potential for money.
          Just hope it really happens!

I'm really glad to see AMD taking this stance, and see it to have many advantages in the future

If AMD really opens up the firmware too, I think it will will whatever marketshare is left too.

Yeah, they need an answer to their GPU driver situation and HDMI 2.1 not being supported due to the HDMI spec "owners" blocking them including the code. Most monitors have a DP port, although it's hard to find one with multiple DP ports if you switch between multiple PCs, but for people who want to plug into a high-end TV for "couch gaming" there could be problems. Yes, you can get a active DP->HDMI dongle, but it should "just work" and most people will blame Linux "not working" and go back to Windows where it works fine.

Fuck the HDMI spec "owners" for being dipshits. If I could buy TVs, laptops, GPUs and monitors with ONLY DP ports I would.

One still must wonder how free this will actually be, or if it will be just some blob loader in the end. I'm looking forward, but I'll believe it, once I hold it in my hands (on my Ryzen desktops/mobile systems).
Stop TCPA, stupid software patents and corrupt politicians!
