Yes if someone steals your land, offers no compensation whatsoever and proceeds to steal your water and electricity as well, the very first thing you do is cut them off. The Russians stole Crimea, so as long as they stay, they are solely responsible for electricity and water in Crimea.

IMHO politics shouldn´t influence such decisions. Software should be Open and we should work together, no mater what the governments do.
Cooperation between people and mutal dependence always makes it harder to start a war, if we remove that by sanctions that´s a bad thing..

What i believe will happen anyway: There will be two "techspheres" sooner or later, a chinese / russian one and a western one.

We are starting to see the first uC which are developed soley in china with only chinese datasheet + non-mainlined GCC. There are even companies developing toolchains for RISC-V based CPUs based on VSCode and gcc with heavy modifications, which are not mainlined.

Sooner or later they will notice, that´s that not a sustainable development model and if a critical mass is reached, they will just maintain their own forks shared by many companies.. At that point the "techspheres" will fork..

There is already a language barrier to some extend (most devs there can speak english, but they may still write their documentation and code comments in chinese/mandarin), we recently added sanction barriers, if we now start to ban hardware support from Open Source packages, it is another driver for a fork.

Short term, that might be beneficial for the west, but long-term i guess the sheer development cycle number + speed in china will outpace our western development cycles, which are somehow slower, due to over-regulation.
