Phoronix: AMD "Smart Trace Buffer" Feature Being Wired Up For Linux

AMD patches this month have begun preparing support for a new CPU feature called Smart Trace Buffer (STB)...

The big issue with this this new feature is it isn't persistent, if your machine locks up there's no way to see what that trace is

For the suspend issues, there's a chance it might have been captured before it suspended - I've submitted the trace, it's all gibberish however so I'm guessing AMD know how to decode it into something more useful

My new laptop went to sleep and the screen didn't come back on after it woke up, couldn't SSH in, but it logged to journalctl

Not to be the conspiracy theorist, but doesn't this reak of back doors? Having the microcontroller, the psp, know about the return value of every function call at worst and state of the registers at best seems iffy.

A true conspiracy theorist already believed every x86 and ARM chip reeks of backdoors.

No, no. AMD is holy within the tech community, Intel is the only one doing bad things.

That's why the true path is PowerPC but afaik next gen is also slightly closed source. So next holy grail risc-v ?

kylew77 not conspiracy. But if this thing is flawed an exploit could be quite powerful.

                    RISC-V also joins.
