Phoronix: Intel Sapphire Rapids To Have Experimental "RAR" Feature

Adding to the lengthy list of features for Intel's next-gen Xeon "Sapphire Rapids" processors next year is an admittedly experimental feature called RAR, or Remote Action Requests...

With that name, it sounds so much like "exploit coming in 3, 2, 1"...

Will it share the fate of SGX (removal from consumer products - for example Rocket Lake doesn't have it) or TSX (early disablement in Haswell microcode update and recently from most other lines as well)?

Please note that IntelRAR is not free software. After a 40 day trial period you must either buy a license or remove it from your computer.

          Again?

Oh, so it's actually a sensible feature. With that name, I half expected Sapphire Rapids to run a builtin HTTP server for remote control.

No, that's included with vPRO at no extra charge!

This is awesome. This is a feature every one has been waiting for like forever. WTF is a TLB shoot down?

After 40 days, the computer will display a nag screen when using any of the RAR instructions, but it will work as usual.

So... you are telling me to remove the CPU from my computer? o-o

                    A quick example:
                    1. You have some memory shared by all of the processors in your system.
                    2. One of your processors restricts access to a page of that shared memory.
                    3. Now, all of the processors have to flush their TLBs, so that the ones that were allowed to access that page can't do so any more.
The actions of one processor causing the TLBs to be flushed on other processors is what is called a TLB shootdown.
