  • Microchip announces PolarFire SoC : FPGA fabirc with integrated RISC-V cores

I'm at the RISC-V summit and wanted to share this exciting piece of hardware announced today:

It's basically a FU540 system (4x Linux capable RISC-V cores + 1 RISC-V "Management" core, same basic design as the SiFive Freedom Unleashed) with a Microsemi FPGA fabric attached. Should be shipping in 3Q2020, and there will be a "Icicle" dev board shipping at the same time for "a few hundred dollars" in a Raspberry Pi-ish form factor with the RPi 40pin header. Includes HDMI (connected to the FPGA, but looks like licenses for various video IP is included and can be used for making some form of GPU), 2x GbE, USB, and some PCI-Express lanes. I am unsure if the PCI-Express will be capable of running an external GPU, but since it's the same fabric and IP blocks used on the Freedom Unleashed Expansion Board, there is a good chance it will. I'll try and follow up on that tomorrow. Happy to ask other questions if folks have them, but this looks like a very solid piece of kit and a great mass market RISC-V board!
