            I had a Core 2 Duo with broken HPET. Short sleeps would randomly hang the CPU until user input. Workarounds included booting with clocksource=tsc, disabling some CPU sleep state, or disabling tickless kernel.

              I wonder what other operating systems like Windows, macOS, ESXi, and FreeBSD do to workaround this, or if they also disable it.

                      You do know that Spectre also affects AMD CPUs as well as ARM CPUs and all of their variants? Only Meltdown is exclusive to Intel.
