Phoronix: Noctua Air Cooling With The AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2970WX

With this week's launch of the Ryzen Threadripper 2920X and 2970WX, the new 24-core / 48-thread 2970WX has a 250 Watt TDP like the 2990WX. Fortunately, with Noctua's high-end TR4/SP3 heatsinks, it's still possible to get by with air cooling...

So there's throttling involved even at 70C? GG AMD.

Is it throttling or is it just not using maximum turbo states? From the reviews around I've seen all-core turbo of ~3.5GHz while the base clock is 3.0GHz. The thermal/turbo management on Zen-based processors is very impressive. It can eliminate the need to manually overclock a 2700X for example. The biggest Threadrippers are basically 4 CPUs stitched together with 250W TDP so keeping this running stably while dynamically maximising performance is not easy.

Very big Intel CPUs also have lower maximum temperatures.
