With development wrapping up soon on the Linux 4.18 kernel (although it looks like the official release will likely be delayed one week), I've been carrying out some fresh benchmarks of this near-final kernel in the latest Linux Git state on various Intel and AMD desktop CPUs -- mostly the higher-end desktop systems. Here are those 100+ benchmark results across six different systems...

If you thought Spectre doesn't affect AMD CPUs when it even affects non-x86 CPUs, then that's your own problem. Only Meltdown is Intel-specific.

Well, Spectre Variant 2 may be theoretically possible on AMD CPUs but nobody had success doing it. It's very hard to do and near impossible to succeed.

Only Meltdown is Intel-specific.

Thats wrong. ARM (including Apple CPUs) were affected, IBM POWER too.

not Spectre 2 but Specter 2a and 3a is not reproductible on AMD CPUs. Branchsope, TLBleed and SpectreRSB are Intel only, yet

Intel will be losing performance bit a bit with every security patch. But their processors still clock higher than Zen (about 20% or so).

Zen2 being just a clock bump would be enough to reach Intel-like performance (it won't be, which is even better).

AMD TR 1950x $800, Intel i9 7960X $1400 on Newegg right now. You really need a big performance difference on your workload to go Intel on that market segment.

Yup. When you look at performance per dollar, AMD wins by a huge margin, especially at the high end. A fool and his money are easily parted.
