Would it make you any happier if the backdoor went into FSB (Федера́льная слу́жба безопа́сности Росси́йской Федера́ции) or MSS (Chinese Ministry of State Security)? What's funny about you guys here in Phoronix - you always do seem to over-dramatize NSA and it's "evilness" - don't seem to give rat's ass about less public intelligence agencies in the "less-free" world.
Which are fucking real and in reverse, do not give rat's ass about your rights and freedoms AT ALL, while NSA at least has to pay lip-service to'em and actually is ultimately protecting YOUR (assuming you are citizens of the "Anglosphere" (US/UK/Australia) countries) ultimate interests on State level..

Instead you bitch at NSA and whine. You are so dumb, you don't even know to appreciate the ability to do so - in certain countries critique towards such agencies gets you a prison cell with trumped up charges piled all over you. By God, you are such idiots along with your "NSA is evil" bs..

The fact that there are worse situations does not make the current one any less bad.

Also lol at the claim that NSA is protecting citizen's ultimate interests "on a state level".

In Western society State ultimately represents the interests of it's citizens in general. You could actually claim that it works towards the goal of bettering and protecting the lives of it's citizens. Intelligence agencies are part of a mechanism that defends State's interests against it's competitors or outright enemies. If you take it as a pure logical expression then after a bunch of reductions you WOULD end up with "intelligence agencies protecting the citizens of the country it's representing". You guys, on the other hand make it sound here, like NSA had not a shit to do and only cares about spying on YOU personally and would then proceed making your dirty little secrets public to your neighbours. I can assure you - they don't give a flying fuck about your porn collection or interests in same sex - unless it somehow would threaten State, it's governing body or welfare of it's citizens some way.

Since agencies do not have reliable gypsies with crystal balls capable of telling them WHAT and WHOM to target - they have to collect data somehow, all kinds of data and sift through it. Collection happens in 2 major forms - sigint and humint - signal intelligence and human intelligence. Former is pretty much what you whine about, latter is about people spying physically on each-other (simplification). Sifting is done by employing major supercomputers and only shit getting flagged gets looked on by some analyst personally. Who are mostly overworked and bored with their work. Most of the actual snooping is utterly impersonal, automatic and computer- based.

I can also write out the difference compared to autocratic systems. If you care. It's there and pretty plain.
