Raspberry Pi 5 16GB Model Launches For $120 USD

Phoronix: Raspberry Pi 5 16GB Model Launches For $120 USD

One of the leading rare complaints over the Raspberry Pi 5 single board computer (and the more recently launched Raspberry Pi 500) is that it tops out at just 8GB of system memory... 8GB was enough years ago and still is if planning to use the Raspberry Pi for lightweight desktop and embedded scenarios and other situations where you don't need too much RAM for the four ARM cores, but for those wanting more, today the Raspberry Pi 5 16GB is being introduced...

i'm not quite sure what the usecase is here but maybe in combination with the new AI hat or heavy database work

Ahah, funny! I finally decided to buy an 8GB Raspberry Pi 5 this week and assembled it and booted it for the first time yesterday! I never made such a badly timed expense. 🤣️

Anyway, the result of the test is that Unvanquished can run at more than 60fps at 1920×1080 wiht Mesa 25 (low preset):

👀 Do you know? The Raspberry Pi 5 can run #Unvanquished in 1920×1080 at more than 60fps! 🚀 Here at 70~80fps with #Mesa 25. We even have some model #optimizations to come! #indiedev #gamedev #indi...

Ah, and I already have two bugs to report to Mesa (nothing preventing to play). 🤪️

To play Unvanquished on the Pi 5, it is needed to configure the boot to use the 4K PageSize kernel, because of some Native Client limitations:
I discovered in the past that the Raspberry Pi OS for arm64 based on Debian Bookworm was not running Unvanquished, while an older Raspberry Pi Os based on an older Debian did. I first experienced i...

I don't think someone who want to run CFD would choose R-Pi.

I rather take radxa x4 for the price.

Rpi5 costs way too high and is a pretty stupid limited design. Especially not having emmc, at least they could have left the pins on the board, I can solder one myself. But instead the artificially segregate and spin up market for selling accessories.

With a new SoC this might work, but with the existing silicon the extra RAM is useless.

It would be good if it could properly decode 4K HEVC & AV1 + HDR movies!
And its driver would support a more recent version than 1.0 of Vulkan.
I'm expecting that in the next few years KDE Plasma and Gnome will have Vulkan renderers for greater performance and power efficiency.

Hopefully the Pi 6 will have more CPU grunt, to do this in software, and not rely on crappy hardware decoding.
