  • X870 motherboard support

    Hello,

I am going to order a custom build of a new system with AMD 9950x CPU, i was going to order it with Asus Prime B650, but the supplier is offering a free upgrade to ASUS PRIME X870-P , but I can't find any information on what works and what doesn't work on this motherboard on Linux. My plan is to install the latest Ubuntu LTS.

So, did anyone have any experience with that?

SO, to answer my own question, I got a chance to play a little with ASUS PRIME X870-P motherboard with AMD 9950x CPU, and here is what I found out:

Ubuntu 20.04.6 - onboard NIC ( RTL8125 ) does not work, onbard wifi doesn't work, onboard USB4 does not work, sound seem to be working.
Ubuntu 24.04.1 - onboard NIC does not work, onboard WiFi seem to be semi working - able to associates with the hotspot but no connectivity after, onboard USB4 seem to work, sound seem to be working.

I recently rebuilt with the same board, I ended up going to best buy and getting a J5Create USB 3.0 to Ethernet adapter model JUE130. USB-C works on 6.12, running Slackware current and Slackware stable with this board. My biggest issues with it is I can't update the BIOS. I have had this issue with a previous Asus Prime Z270-P intel board, I had to contact support, if I remember correctly it was a bit before they uploaded a bios to their site that that board would accept as a update file.

I did everything following the instructions exactly, keeps saying not a valid BIOS .CAP file.

I have an Intel PCIe Nic, plus another USB Ethernet adapter to checkout coming in the mail soon and a SATA PCIe expansion card, good stuff to have on hand anyway, inexpensive.

You tried to flash the BIOS with any luck? I will be contacting Asus fairly soon to tell them whats going on on my end. Me personally I think it's a really nice board so far except for the few things mentioned in my first post on here.

No, I don't actually need WiFi at all , ended up getting a PCIE Intel I210 card.

I wish there was a simple X870 motherboard without all the modern bells and whistles (like WiFI7 and USB4) , but with integrated intel network chip.

Ok, I actually got the BIOS flashed, I ended up having to boot a Windows 10 drive and download the My Asus application and download and rename the file from there. The BIOS finally took it. Pretty strange but ok I'll take it.

The point in X870 is literally all the bells and whistles. You could get a X670, or B650 and have exactly what you want.
