The newer versions of alsa are masked or listed as unstable. What he listed above doesn't show what version is going into my kernel as it only shows what is currently running, not what is in the source I'm trying to compile.

Considering that the alsa versions that were recommended above are masked or listed as "unstable" according to gentoo I need to determine if I am using the right source for that version of alsa.

How can I make sure I have the right version of alsa going into my kernel? You know, before I compile it.

The alsa version is quite unimportant, everything above 1.0.16 should work pretty well.

The problem is that we don't have any report of working HDMI audio on RS780 with radeonhd, so i think the current code simply doesn't work on this hardware.
But, since i wrote the code i think i can help with that.
