Phoronix: AMD Radeon RX 580 Linux OpenGL/Vulkan Benchmarks

For those curious if the Radeon RX 580 "Polaris Evolved" graphics card is worthwhile as a Linux gamer, here are the initial Phoronix figures for the RX 580 8GB graphics card that launched yesterday. These initial tests were done with AMDGPU+RadeonSI/RADV under a variety of OpenGL and Vulkan workloads.

AMD should be ashamed, this is basically an overclocked 480 with a new name. These guys are following the same path as Mozilla with their versioning scheme.

This is because: IT IS A 480---- with higher clock rate....

This is primarly because pciid does not take revision id into account and to differinate on these pretty marketing names

But i agree main id is the same like RX 480, while this RX 580 is revision E7... so basically that is what it is - enhanced Polaris.

It's not clear if RX500 is manufactured in another process: LPE vs LPP+
But fact is, that at least the firmware is much matured.
Power consumption during FHD video playback goes down from ~39 W to ~14 W.
2 and multi screen power consumption is much better, too.

Adored TV's 580 review was quite interesting on undervolting the 580 with AMD's 'Chill'

Like Stable LTS+ , it is not exactly like switching from Debian 8 to Debian 9, but more like up to date Debian 8.7, 8.8

Revisions are fine, just seems people does not like inflated major marketing numbers or just have a need because of that to makes it clear how this is minor revision

Right, because Nvidia hasn't been reusing and rebranding their hardware for the past decade or more.

This is like Firefox ESR or linux longterm revisions, builded and tweaked on up to date underlining process Like nVidia's minor P and major P on Titan Xp XP They tweaked something they want and that is it

Problem is newer major GPU architecture does not come every year for any major vendors - that is more like 2+ years but market seems to expect new arch products every year It is not like that, if you look in between these cycles you would see they do mostly revisions and configs differences

Not sure why folks get their panties in a wad over incremental updates. Nobody is upgrading from 480 to a 580. This is for those who haven't upgraded in a while. No different from intel tick-tock where a new chip might be only 5% faster than the old one.
