Phoronix: NVIDIA Is Making A Big Announcement Tomorrow

NVIDIA wants you to spend your Friday night with them, at least virtually. There's an exciting unveil tomorrow...

Phoronix, Linux Hardware Reviews, Linux hardware benchmarks, Linux server benchmarks, Linux benchmarking, Desktop Linux, Linux performance, Open Source graphics, Linux How To, Ubuntu benchmarks, Ubuntu hardware, Phoronix Test Suite

OK, obviously it's overhyping the initial round of Pascal cards.

The real question will be, do they at least show off the cards and show something happening or are we looking at Capsaicin 2.0 where the "big reveal" is that some marketing exec likes to eat hot wings.

Maybe they go open source like AMD?

I have some expectation of this. With more stuff being pushed into firmware blob, making an open driver is probably something Nvidia will eventually do.

GTX 1080 will be a new USD ~500 chip which performs slightly better than GTX 980 Ti. The next chip which will push the boundaries of graphics performance is scheduled for later this year (GP102).

just another round of crappy "hostile to open source" hardware.
Maybe the new feature is that it spontaneously combusts?

They would probably name it GT X80, GX80, or GTX N80, since GTX 1080 would be confusing the people would think that a GTX 1080 can only be used for 1080 screens (there is people dumb like that).

I would love to see them announcing something like AMDGPU maybe even announcing that new new Pascal GPUs are going full open source from that point on.

C'mon bro, keep a positive attitude. Maybe they change course and embrace open source...it could happen!
