The R300 cards are not remade, they are just relabled, why do you think it is possible to flash the firmware on older cards if you adjust the RAM size, clock und voltage settings? As those values are exchangable you can use the lastest driver in case it has some extra features enabled by PCI ID. The minimally increased stock speed was already available before with factory OC cards. Funnly the VRAM was doubled, a bit weird as the HBM cards are limited to 4 GB now and the GDDR5 cards have 8 GB ;-)

The R9 300 series is more than just rebrands, they are so-called "refreshes", similar to what Intel do with their CPUs all the time.
Richard Huddy explains here:

More evidence from PC Perspective, when the 300 series drivers were modded to run on a 290X card, the 390X still outperformed it:

Hi. I want to buy such a card from a European retailer (hardware.nl; the card costs around 155 euros), so I can afford it easily right now. The only thought prevents me from doing this, and that is because AMD will show us HBM 2.0 next year. Do you think it is worth waiting for several months to get something like MSI R7-470 based on the HBM 2.0 memory?
