Phoronix: It Looks Like HDMI FreeSync/VRR For Linux + Wayland Support Will Eventually Come For AMD

AMD provided an update on their Linux FreeSync/Adaptive-Sync support at this week's X.Org Developers Conference event in Montreal. There's good news both for HDMI and Wayland Linux users with Radeon graphics...

Good to see some plans materializing for Wayland use case with adaptive sync. I wouldn't personally worry much about HDMI, it's better to stay away from it to begin with, and use DisplayPort.

I would more wish for Freesync while having a non-freesync secondary monitor...

I am annoyed by the very same thing.

In fact, I asked the question in ##sway on freenode a while ago. As I believed, this is a X11 technical limitation. It appears that the Wayland extension and sway/wlroots will be able to support this usecase.

will the freesync hdmi support require hdmi 2.1 support?

Well that's like your personal use case. There's many people out there stuck with HDMI and it's always been a heavily requested feature.

The bad news is always for Nvidia users.

Isn't that limitation due to Xorg and not the underlying implementation?

I hope it won't! There are a ton of HDMI only Freesync monitors out there which would be left without support on Linux.
