They were doing that via shaders now, right? And reserving some GPU resources for it? Even though it eats some of your GPU power (unlike an ASIC would), it's probably the more flexible and universal method.
If it is freedom code already then that's a good start and hopefully someone(TM) will add the Linux based OS related bits soon.
