  • Looking for a laptop capable of playing 1080 movies over HDMI

    Hi all

The time has come for me to dump my stationary computer for another one and since it was a long time i followed the development on the linux hardware front closely... I'm in need of help!

I'm looking for a computer thats capable of playback HD-media even in matroska format aswell as capable of delivering dolby digital & DTS sound through HDMI. It dosent matter if its nvidia, ATI or Intel graphics card, as long as its relatively hasslefree to get it working. And I dont care much for the muscle in the computer since i dont do any intensive computing/ gaming on the PC anymore.

I was thinking of a eeepc 1215N but since lots of its hardware dosent seem to be compatible in linux (optimus 2 and the ethernet among others), i decided not to bother. I was thinking of some laptop with intel i5 cpu but dont know if they can run 1080 movies?

Keep in mind that I live in europe and cant order from the US, since that'd put me out of cash ;-)

    Thanks!

You should look for something with an intel GMA4500MHD graphics chip. AMD's are a ways away from supporting video acceleration, and nvidia is not a good organization to be supporting due to their failure to support open source.

I think a laptop with a Core iX chip would be a better choice, should he want H.264 video decoding. Older G45 chips are not supported yet. They might be so next year, with the release of next generation Atom processors with G45 cores builtin. This is a wild guess of mine, though. I don't know Intel plans.

BTW, current upstream libva for Intel HD Graphics now include non-linear anisotropic scaling & spatial deinterlacing. Other post-processing features are on the way when VA-API is updated to cope with those. e.g. browsing through the sources reveals some sort of noise reduction filter.

If everything has to work try Zareason http://zareason.com/ and System76 http://www.system76.com/

If you want to avoid the Windows tax try one of th highly rated customizers like Ava Direct http://notebooks.avadirect.com/Notebooks Puget Systems http://www.pugetsystems.com/ or will install Linux for you, you'll want to ask them to do a test to ensure that everything will work out of box though.

XoticPC http://www.xoticpc.com/ and Power Notebooks http://www.powernotebooks.com/ offer models without any OS, but no options for Linux preinstalled.
