Phoronix: Raspberry Pi Camera Front End "CFE" Video Capture With Linux 6.13

Following the initial Raspberry Pi 5 upstream support in Linux 6.12 providing basic support, an exciting Raspberry Pi addition with the in-development Linux 6.13 kernel is introducing a Raspberry Pi Camera Front-End "CFE" driver...

This at least seems to be going faster than the upstreaming of all the pieces needed for Intel's IPU6 cameras. And those were on laptops where the camera is important to a lot of people.

Show me those people? As doing RMA including laptops for 99% of people cameras are glued over. For all those office plankton office meetings, they are so bad they use a phone, that looks miles better.

I rather hope it paves way to create DIY camera platform for attaching more serious sensors and start to compete with larger makers without breaking a bank. Surveillance being the first step.

Only the millions of people with jobs who need to at least occasionally, and many times frequently, use their webcam for meetings. And no, some janky ass setup with their laptop + their cell phone is not a better solution. Been there, done that. Also, the IPU6 camera in my Dragonfly G3 has a nice 2560x1920 sensor.

I'm one of those people! I was given a Dell XPS with one of those IPU6 cameras for a DevOps job. It worked with the Ubuntu 22.04 it shipped with and never again after updating releases. It's been miserably painful for any remote work for years, to the point I join the meeting twice to get video from my phone and a real screen for screen sharing work. Bonus is I don't need to cover the camera like allegedly 99% of other people, because I know it doesn't work.
