Motherboard manufacturers being uninterested in supporting Linux has to me been a notable absence for us. Asus, MSI, Gigabyte, Biostar.... none of them are particularly active in the Linux world. Not that I'm aware of, if someone else knows more I'd like the information. This is a particular oddity given that a Linux user has most likely a higher probability to be deeply technical and by extension desirous of building their(our) own computers.

Even Intel, who does quite a lot for the open source world - not their motherboard division.

No need to f**k around with centralized website FW server etcetc.

No, it's just another attempt to make user's life easier.
You could also use fwupd to install open source firmware offline from a local file (or maybe, one day, an open source firmware only repo) if you want.
It's nothing worst than any package manager which also could be used to install closed source package from proprietary repositories.

fwupd is a like a package manager for firmware, and LVFS is the repository where it by default downloads firmware images from. fwupd has multiple backend mechanisms for actually installing the image to the device, flashrom being one of them. There is no "fwupd vs flashrom" war.
