With the performance improvements there is a significant reduction in interrupt load to "a small fraction" of what it was before with the MT7615 and newer.

Seems like my chipset is too old and doesn't benefit much from these 5.10 improvements?

Are there any good 802.11ax USB dongles? (is there even one with mainline kernel driver?)

OpenWrt developer. Mediatek paid him to write an upstream kernel driver.

This news story is confusing. It mostly references mt76 support for embedded hardware. People run OpenWrt on these devices, not mainline kernels.

I use a PCIE card based on Intel AX201. (Could not find a non-Intel one when I bought this a year ago.) Works out the box on OpenSuse Tumbleweed. I'm sure a usb one would work just fine.

OpenWRT upgrades their kernels every so often though so eventually it will be helpful for openwrt users.

Some of the chipsets like the MT7615 are available as oversized mPCIE cards.

Still, there isn't much point in rigging one to use as a client card since they require four antennas.
