There is a control issue using Windows update to ship out firmware. Vendors prefer to use their own update system on windows a lot so that a bad firmware image can be quickly made not accessible. Lot of ways I think the fwupd design is a more suitable design for what vendors want. The means to have a repository absolutely under the hardware vendors control can be very important feature windows update solution is not providing.

There is a difference here. With windows update method of installing firmware the firmware has to be placed on the Windows Update servers. fwupd vendor can keep the firmware on their own controlled servers.

When you think about the case you by mistake send out a goofed up firmware if you are running your own fwupd repository you can stop people getting the firmware faster than having to talk to Microsoft and get them pull it from the windows update repository.

Reading the cab files make it simple for those who have already done their firmware up for windows to release on https://fwupd.org/lvfs/ for Linux.

The question is if fwupd end up working well on Windows. With the fact as vendor you can run your own repo would you still bother about Windows Update method it would seam like duplication and lack of control.

The Linux fwupd system looks very good and could make it much easier on Windows to update firmware, especially durring the boot process before the interactive gui comes up.

Basically, it depends. If you have a notebook or PC from one of the major vendors, they will typically have some program to check for updates and offer to install them for you. But if you add 3rd party options, or if you build your own PC, those options will each have to install their own app to check for firmware updates. And some simply don't bother, or perhaps you don't want 10 different apps checking for firmware updates, each with their own potential security and privacy issues.

For instance, I have a Logitech wireless mouse that had been used on Windows 10 for a few months with the latest Logitech software installed. I then plugged it into my Linux machine and fwupd notified me that a firmware update was available for the dongle. A firmware update that had been available for a long time, but the windows software never bothered to update or even notify me that an update was available.

Well most OEMs also provide custom firmware/software update applications, through which they normally distribute driver and BIOS/UEFI updates. Unless they change those applications to use fwupd, there's not much point to fwupd on Windows.
