This Week: Moblin, Mesa, X, GNOME
This week there were several new software releases including the Linux 2.6.32-rc3 kernel, KDE 4.3.2, Alien Arena 7.31, OpenChrome 0.2.904, Wine 1.1.31, and xf86-video-radeonhd 1.3.0. Worth noting with the new Wine release are continued Direct3D 10 advancements and the start of Microsoft ActiveX support within JavaScript. The Alien Arena release is also interesting for the graphics improvements, new game mode, and other new content for this first-person shooter. Also made available this week were new preview releases of Mutter and the GNOME Shell.
Outside of the new software releases in the Linux world, Red Hat's Plymouth project picked up an X11 renderer used for debugging purposes now but may be end up being a useful feature for end-users in the future, it's now possible to run OpenCL benchmarks on Linux through the Phoronix Test Suite, and the Debian FreeBSD kernel is ready for Debian 6.0 "Squeeze" in both 32-bit and 64-bit versions. On the gaming side of things we found out that the Unigine Engine now supports OpenGL 3.2.
In the X world, this week brought more ATI kernel mode-setting improvements to the Linux 2.6.32 kernel, there was an article on the status of Nouveau and RadeonHD drivers (Nouveau Update), the X Server 1.8 release schedule, found out that the Gallium3D R300-500 driver is mostly done, and that Adobe Flash Player 10.1 may support VDPAU for HD video decoding.
The featured articles at Phoronix this week included an ECS A785GM-M Black motherboard review, Mesa 7.6 Gets Pulled Into Ubuntu 9.10, A Brief Look At Yoper 2009, SilverStone Grandia GD03 chassis review, and Intel Releases Moblin 2.1 Preview.
