The State Of The X.Org Foundation In Late 2014

Peter Hutterer on the behalf of the X.Org Foundation Board of Directors issued an update regarding their state at this year's XDC2014 Bordeaux conference.

Those not in attendance at XDC2014 in France can find a copy of Peter's slides via this HTML copy. Some of my takeaways include:

- The board encourages everyone relevant to re-join every year at members.x.org.

- The X Window System turned 30 years old this summer.

- Four of 7 GSoC projects were successful with the others failing due to various reasons.

- X.Org's EVoC had one of two projects succeed this past year.

- The foundation feels a need to better handle EVoC. They feel it's currently too generic, there is a need for stricter deadlines, stricter rules, and better communication.

- The X.Org board sponsored travel for LWN's Jake Edge to cover the conference. (Not that I mind the foundation funding some "competing" web-site to cover the conference, as we target very different demographics, but based upon my professional accounting experience I'm not sure it's legal for a 501(c)3 to do so in the US for sponsoring media, especially when any coverage is behind a pay wall.) At the end of the day I also personally just believe in capitalism and not being subsidized by other organizations to provide coverage, hence why I went this year without covering XDC in person and not trying to pursue any subsidization.

- X.Org is still pushing their OPW women outreach program for getting more females involved with X.Org-related developments.
