Intel's Cherry Trail Delayed To Next Year

While we've been quite excited to get our hands on Cherry Trail hardware after the great encounters with Bay Trail on Linux, it looks like we'll be waiting a few more months.

Cherry Trail devices were originally expected to appear this autumn, but now it doesn't look like we'll find any new tasty hardware until some point in 2015. Fudzilla got its hands on an updated Intel slide indicating the Cherry Trail move to at least the middle of 2015.

Cherry Trail will use Intel's Airmont micro-architecture that's a 14nm shrink of Silvermont. The bigger brother to Cherry Trail will be Braswell (not to be confused with Broadwell). Cherry Trail will feature Intel Broadwell "Gen8" graphics and should be quite an exciting performance and feature update over Bay Trail. Broxton, meanwhile, with the Goldmont CPU architecture (presumably derived from Skylake) are expected to replace Cherry Trail in 2016.

As we've been covering in multiple Phoronix articles, the Cherry Trail Linux support -- particularly around the graphics -- is settling down and should be in good shape. With a few months to go until seeing the hardware, hopefully this will yield some more improvements to come ahead of the hardware debut. Once Cherry Trail does launch, you can expect to find many Linux benchmarks on Phoronix.
