The latest bi-weekly release of the Wine software, v1.5.22, has a couple of interesting features.

The official change-log for Wine 1.5.22 as released today cites the following highlights:

- New version of the Gecko engine.
- Beginnings of the Mac graphics driver.
- Support for ARM64 platforms.
- Fixes for RTL text in Uniscribe.
- Various bug fixes.

An updated version of the Mozilla Gecko browser engine is always good, but the most interesting work is support for 64-bit ARM platforms (AArch64) and the beginnings of the Mac graphics driver. There were also 50 bug-fixes as part of the 1.5.22 release.

The Mac graphics driver work comes down to the "winemac" driver (formerly known as "winequartz") that comes down to a native Apple OS X driver for use with Quartz rather than relying upon the X11 driver. By not being dependent upon the X11 driver, there's better integration possibilities for Wine on OS X. Newly implemented winemac functionality includes layered windows, window surface rendering, the Mac "window" menu with the Cocoa API, owned windows, basic window functionality, and other OS X integration features.

The ARM64/AArch64 support for Wine should grow more important in the future as 64-bit ARM hardware begins to ship in 2014.
