Our latest Ubuntu 14.04 LTS benchmarks up this morning to complement our preliminary Ubuntu 14.04 LTS server benchmarks and desktop benchmarks are of the past two Ubuntu Long Term Support releases running within DigitalOcean's public cloud.

On Friday when running a 12 core, 32GB RAM, 320GB SSD cloud droplet/instance type, I did fresh droplets of Ubuntu 12.04.4 LTS and Ubuntu 14.04 LTS -- that was after creating/destroying droplets until getting reasonably matching hardware, per my variable cloud computing performance article from yesterday.

This testing is quite simple and straightforward and to look at performance differences between Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and 14.04 LTS. The most notable changes for these particular workloads being benchmarked is 12.04 LTS being on Linux 3.8 while Ubuntu 14.04 LTS is on Linux 3.13. The former Ubuntu release is also using the GCC 4.6 compiler while Ubuntu 14.04 uses GCC 4.8, which can make a big difference for source-compiled, performance-sensitive workloads.

All of this preliminary Ubuntu 14.04 LTS cloud benchmarking was done using the open-source and enterprise-rated Phoronix Test Suite benchmarking software where you can easily reproduce these tests or run your own Linux server/cloud benchmarks.
