After having used the system now for a few hours on each of the days since starting this ATI trial, the experience so far has been good. While the installation problems with FC5 was the only show-stopper so far, there hasn't been any massive problems to creep up yet at least. Concurring with the Phoronix articles comparing the NVIDIA/ATI Linux components, the quantitative performance has been less than the GeForce 7800GTX, but with the X1800XT everything is still operational. Once the new 8.26 fglrx display drivers are officially out this month, I will be further looking at its performance.
I have also been trying out the system with a variety of X.Org configurations and all of the other features bundled within the proprietary drivers. While ATI is still developing the dynamic display management options, the --query-monitor has worked appropriately even when trying out a Xinerama configuration.
$ aticonfig --query-monitor
Connected monitors: crt1, crt2
Enabled monitors: crt1, crt2
