ATI fglrx + Fedora

Posted by Michael Larabel on Day 01 (June 01, 2006)

While ATI does not have official support for Fedora Core 5 with the 8.25.18 drivers, some of the Livna changes should hopefully be adapted to the official ATI installer with the 8.26.x release later this month. With fglrx 8.25.18 recognizing and configuring for X.Org v7.0.0, the installer itself does not run into any problems with FC5. Previously the installer would work with FC5 when manually specifying the X version, however, aticonfig would fail to detect libfglrx_pp.so.1.0. Using the fglrx 8.25.18 release, some users on various Linux forums have reported that the drivers install and function flawlessly, while others have had faced problems. How did it fair in my particular setup? Well, it wasn't very pleasant. The ATI installer had worked accordingly, however, upon restarting the system, the system would hang after rhgb but prior to starting gdm. Attempting to address that issue, I had tried different kernels, using Livna packages, reverting to 8.24.08 drivers, and other items but all attempts had failed. Finally, the system had booted flawlessly once turning to alternative ATI drivers (more information to come soon). This system is running FC5 Bordeaux x86_64 SMP. I will continue to look after the compatibility throughout the duration of this trial, but at this time the fglrx + FC5 support is somewhat gloomy.
