For those using Blender, the open-source 3D modeling application, a new release is now available with plenty of changes. Among the new features in Blender 3D 2.43 is sculpture modeling, improved render pipeline, multiple UV and vertex color layers, fluid particles, and a whole lot more. The Blender website has also been redesigned. The Blender 2.43 change-log is available here.

As pointed out by Slashdot, Adobe will be releasing the specifications the full PDF specifications to the International Standards Organization (ISO). Certainly this is a great move especially for Linux users with open standards.

The sixth and final beta release for GAIM 2.0.0 has now hit SourceForge! GAIM 2.0.0 Beta 6 addresses a great deal of bugs, new user interface changes, some Google Talk features, new plug-ins, and an assortment of other improvements. After the recent release of OpenOffice.org 2.1, AbiWord 2.5.0 has been released. AbiWord 2.5.0 is a development release in the way to AbiWord 2.6.0. Among the changes for this word processor release is a new Pango-based renderer, libgsf and Glib integration, improved build system, AbiWord GTK+ widget, tool-bar improvements, plug-in improvements (collaboration plug-in and GNOME Office integration plug-in), and a great deal of other improvements. Second Life, the 3D virtual world game, is being made open-source today. Second Life clients for Windows, Linux, and Macintosh will comply with the GPL. More information on today's announcement can be found here.

AbiWord 2.5.0 will be released soon, and Marc Maurer is calling out users to help in testing AbiWord 2.5.0 along with the plug-ins (primarily the collaboration one). More information is available from the AbiWord home-page.

The Free Software Foundation has launched the BadVista Campaign. This FSF campaign is to make users aware of the harm that would be inflicted if they use Microsoft's Vista operating system. Another objective is to promote free software alternatives. More can be read at the BadVista website.

OpenOffice.org 2.1 (formerly known as OpenOffice.org 2.0.5) has been released. New in OpenOffice 2.1 is multi-monitor support for Impress, improved Calc HTML export, enhanced Microsoft Access support for Base, more language support, and automatic update notifications. The release notes for OpenOffice.org 2.1 can be found here. The current road-map places the release of OpenOffice.org 2.2 on February 27, 2007.

VideoLAN VLC Media Player 0.8.6 has been released. New in VLC 0.8.6 is bug fixing and a handful of new features -- Windows Media Player 9 support, Adobe Flash support, H.264 decoding, and a full-screen controller. The VLC Media Player 0.8.6 download is available here for all major platforms.

Yesterday LightScribe had released their first Linux Software Development Kit (SDK) for Linux. This SDK allows developers to build software that can use LightScribe Technology. The SDK download is available in RPM format, and can be found here. Also available for Linux is the system software and a simple labeler (download links).

In the road to GIMP 2.4.0, GIMP 2.3.13 has been released as the latest development build. More bug-fixes and cleaning has went into this release, but also making its way into the release are new features like embedded color profiles, scalable brushes, improved help browser, and a new Script-Fu Scheme interpreter. The GIMP Change-log and downloads are available so you may join in on this GNOME 2.3.13 development fun.

After test candidates, Songbird 0.2 has finally been released. Songbird 0.2 supports all major platforms, multi-language support, "Play The Web" feature, and developer life-cycle tools. The release announcement can be found at the Songbird Nest.

The fourth Beta release in the GAIM 2.0 cycle has been released. The two major improvements in GAIM 2.0.0 Beta 4 is the default ability when closing the buddy list to minimize to the system tray (previously it required the use of an applet) and communication abilities with NetworkManager. GAIM now has the ability to communicate with NetworkManager to check the network status prior to logging-in. Linux.com has coverage of The GIMP's next-generation imaging core. This next-generation imaging core (GEGL), was publicly demonstrated at the Piksel 06. GEGL -- short for Generic Graphical Library -- was previously considered dead but is making a comeback thanks to The GIMP. More information can be found in this article, along with two screenshots.

On the sixth year anniversary of OpenOffice.org, version 2.0.4 was released. OpenOffice v2.0.4 introduces new PDF management, direct export to LaTex, new functionality in Calc and Impress, and many more enhancements. After the 1.3 Beta release earlier this year for Skype on Linux, the official release has finally come out. Skype v18.104.22.168 fixes several bugs present from the previous 22.214.171.124 Beta. The Linux change-log can be found here, meanwhile the downloads are available here.
