VLC 2.2 (codenamed "Weathermax") was released today as the latest version of the popular, multi-platform, open-source media player.

The VLC 2.2 release supports auto-rotation of phone recorded videos, better support for Ultra HD codecs, VP9, and H.265, new extension support, experimental support for interactive Blu-ray menus with BD-J, the first non-beta Android release, support for the Digital Cinema Package, and many other changes.

Other features for VLC 2.2 and some of the work coming down the pipe for VLC 3.0 are documented in the article earlier this month entitled VLC 2.2 Has Many Features Coming, But VLC 3.0 Will Be Even More Exciting.

More details on VLC 2.2.0 can be found via today's press release.
