Songbird Linux Support Falls Out Of A Tree
Songbird, the open-source multimedia player that's built upon GStreamer and Mozilla Firefox's XULRunner, is no longer chirping a Linux-friendly tune. We have covered Songbird a few times at Phoronix since its initial release back in 2006, but now four years later they will stop officially maintaining the Linux version as they focus just on the Mac OS X and Windows clients.
The next version (Songbird 1.7.2 "NOFX") of Songbird is introducing video support to this player along with other new features, but their Linux client is no longer receiving much love and attention. As such, this support is being dropped. A "community version" will still exist in the source, but it may not necessarily receive any new features or work by the core Songbird developers.
This decision on the dropping of Songbird for Linux was announced via the Songbird blog.
