For those wondering whether there's ABI breakage with this week's X.Org Server 1.17 Release Candidate, there is indeed some breakage that will warrant the proprietary driver ABIs to be updated and released.

X.Org Server 1.17 development mostly focused on integrating (and improving) the xf86-video-modesetting DDX and enhancing GLAMOR, but there were also bug fixes and code clean-ups. In the process of developing X.Org Server 1.17, the ABI broke for the video drivers and extension ABI.

Aaron Plattner of NVIDIA caught the changes and thus now bumped the X.Org Server ABI.

At least NVIDIA will likely be out soon with a new proprietary graphics driver release that's compatible with xorg-server 1.17. Meanwhile, it's anyone's guess when an updated Catalyst will be out to support 1.17 -- almost surely after the new year with the official 1.17 release. Though at least in the future with AMD's new unified Linux driver strategy and also sharing an open-source DDX driver, the Catalyst notorious turnaround time for new X.Org Server support will be an issue of the past.
