FreeBSD Drops BIND, GNU AR From Base System
FreeBSD 10.0 is coming and it's coming on fast. One week after FreeBSD 10.0 Alpha 4 with its heavy changes, the fifth alpha release is now available. Interestingly this release demotes several packages from the FreeBSD base system.
FreeBSD 10.0 Alpha 5 boots out the DNS BIND system, GNU ar, and ranlib from the FreeBSD base system. Packages can still be found in the FreeBSD ports package management system, but will no longer ship in FreeBSD as part of a base installation.
FreeBSD 10.0 Alpha 5 also has bug-fixes and updates to the base LLVM, Bhyve virtualization hypervisor enhancements, Xen virtualization enhancements, and other bug-fixes.
More details on FreeBSD 10.0 Alpha 5 can be found from the mailing list announcement.
