SLAX is one of my favorite lightweight distributions that I have come across but hadn't heard much about it in the past couple of years until receiving an email this week from Tomas, the SLAX maintainer. He was sharing that SLAX 7 is nearly ready for release and packs in KDE4 while still being fairly lightweight.
The entire SLAX 7 system with KDE4 included is just 183MB for the 32-bit build and 188MB for the 64-bit version. SLAX 7 is said to be able to run with systems containing as little as 256MB of RAM.
Tomas has said that he will also be writing a Phoronix article in the coming days talking about the internals of SLAX and how he's been able to cram so much Linux software into the small footprint. More details on this first 7.0 release candidate can be found on his blog.
