It's been three years since the release of MPlayer 1.1 while surprisingly this weekend MPlayer 1.2 was released.

MPlayer 1.2 brings compatibility with FFmpeg 2.8, there is now VDPAU hardware acceleration for H.265/HEVC, many new codecs are now supported via FFmpeg, there are many GUI improvements, and this media player software now relies upon external libdvdcss/libdvdnav packages.

More details on the MPlayer 1.2 changes can be found via the MPlayerHQ.hu announcement. The MPlayer2-forked MPV remains another popular option for those in need of a Linux media player that is frequently updated.
