That Awkward Ubuntu Tablet Plans To Go Up For Pre-Order Soon

Since last December we've been receiving emails from a company working on an Ubuntu Tablet inspired by the failed Ubuntu Edge campaign. That company is apparently going to start accepting pre-orders for their device soon with hopes of shipping this unofficial Ubuntu Tablet in January.

The last we heard of this Ubuntu tablet was earlier in the year when they shared with us their Intel specifications on this tablet and in March had shared expected pricing on the tablet with hopes of shipping the device later this calendar year. Last week I received an unsolicited email from Mark Jun of MJ Technology.

He sent over some pictures of the 8.9 and 10.1-inch versions of these Ubuntu Tablets and shared they plan to start taking pre-orders while the public release for retail sales is expected in January 2016. The "current estimated price" is $349 USD for the 8.9-inch tablet and $399 for the 10.1-inch tablet.

The reported "finalized" specs are:

64GB Internal Storage optional 128GB Storage
MicroSD Slot for external storage (Currently takes 128GB MicroSd TF Cards)
Mini PCI-Express Slot Internal with External access (Standard in 10.1 and we are discussing adding to 8.9")

One USB 3.0 Port
One Micro USB Port
8.9" and 10.1" HD IPS Display with Resolution of 1920x1200 with 10 point multi-touch
2.4/5GHZ Wi-Fi with Bluetooth 4.0

While many Phoronix readers would want a nice, (non-Android), powerful Linux tablet, this tablet still raises several concerns: MJ Tech is a new company with no proven track-record, we haven't got our hands on one of their prototypes to know what the build quality is like, at last report they hadn't even been in contact with Canonical about doing this Ubuntu Tablet, and it still appears they're aiming for the Ubuntu desktop version on this tablet rather than Ubuntu Phone/Touch that's designed for such form factors.
