Eason: Any deveoper/advanced user here?
giselher: no deveoper here :)
Eason: I have some questions about "Writing Your First Test Profile"
Eason: i post mt question in the forum

mrgrieves: do I need a graphics card if I want to setup a box which will host a number of VMs with one of them acting as media centre and another to play games? this box will be reachable over a gigabit netowrk but I'm still not sure what role the graphics card will play on all this if no monitor will be connected directly to the host. I'll be accesing the VMs from a mini desktop assuming all the processing power is on the host ... is this via
meklu: mrgrieves: So you want to connect from a thin client to a main box? I think you'll need the GPU on the a la grande VM host.
meklu: is not sure though.
mrgrieves: meklu: yes that's pretty much correct (connecting from a thin client), the vm host will be running qemu-kvm
mrgrieves: now how do I know how GPU power I'm going to need?
meklu: mrgrieves: Well, what's your budget for the card then?
meklu: It's good to be future proof, you know.
mrgrieves: ~60£
meklu: mrgrieves: You might want to check out the nVidia GT240.
mrgrieves: meklu: thanks, I'll check it out
maligor: I wonder if the HDCP total breakdown has any effect on ATI's stance on UVD
maligor: think that was the original quoted reason
Ivanovic: maligor: IIRC they signed some contract
Ivanovic: unless it is explicitly mentioned in the contact that such a breakdown changes things: no, it is likely not to change anything
maligor: yeah, true
maligor: probably won't matter so much now if it's reverse engineered tho
maligor: not that it was ever worth anything
scotts: I have a "magic" setup, Ubuntu 8.04 with nvidia-glx-new-169.12+2.6.24.14-21.51. This gives me 140-200fps in bzflag with a $28 8400GS. 9.04 and 10.04 give less than 1/2 performance. Ideas on getting modern and what to try?
Padster: hey, primal carnage is switching to UDK, so no linux anymore! *angryface*
Padster: anyone else looking forward to it
Padster: ?
Padster: anyone else care? this is horrible news!
Padster: it was going to be a good, big linux game, and now...
Padster: >:-(
Padster: feels like he's talking to a wall
JEEB: unfortunately UDK isn't exactly a bad engine though. As far as I've touched it.
Padster: i didn't say it was bad, i said it isn't going to be for linux anymore
JEEB: Well, yeah :| Not everything Goes As Planned (insert KeikakuDoori.png), but at least it's an understandable (?) decision.
Padster: i still don't think it was worth it
Padster: even if the engine is a bit better, maybe or easier, they should have kept to UDK
Padster: um... type
Padster: *typo
JEEB: As a personal experience, I certainly didn't like it when a project I was in switched from Python to XNA (C#) with IronPython inside, but I must say -- we're closer at getting a game done than we ever were before lol
Padster: i mean they should have kept unigine
JEEB: Well, personally I don't know the intrisics of that deal, so I can't say much :3
Padster: yeah, well, it is disappointing
Padster: ^^ the log on phoronix.com is quick. updating instantly.
Padster: HELLO IRC LOG!

dgbaley27: I'm running my radeon card with the power profile "mid" What's a good way to induce the clock to jump?
dgbaley27: Nevermind, I misunderstood how the profiles work
dgbaley27: I thought it was like the ondemand governor
