Phoronix IRC Log: 2010-08-21

shadowsun: Bakou: ARGH.
shadowsun: Bakou: Speaking of watching your kernel config like a hawk.. IA32 is what exports register_ioctl32_conversion
Bakou: ia32?
Bakou: ya i gave up on that
Bakou: cuz im too lazy to compile an ubuntu kernel, or install a real distro
shadowsun: Bakou: The fglrx problem I was having.
Bakou: ya i remember
Bakou: but i dont know what ia32 is
shadowsun: Executable file formats -> IA32 emulation got disabled somewhere.
Bakou: heh
shadowsun: no IA32 emulation, no register_ioctl32_conversion, which means build dies.
Bakou: tricky
shadowsun: >.<
shadowsun: Annoying
Bakou: ive had similar issues
Bakou: with suspend and resume on my laptop
Bakou: some random damn thing was disabled
shadowsun: yeah and it breaks everything
Bakou: so it always crashed on resume
Bakou: thats why ive kind of given up and started using fat kernels
Bakou: its worth a few extra MB of ram for peace of mind~
Bakou: ram is cheap nowadays
shadowsun: L2 cache is expensive
Bakou: ya.. but i dont expect some modules that arent being used would wind up there
shadowsun: depends on just how much it autoloads
Bakou: i think there are benchmarks that can demonstrate bigger kernels arent so bad
Bakou: the main thing about compiling it yourself is the optimizations i believe
shadowsun: 1% here, 1% there, pretty soon it's a pretty noticable difference
Bakou: what im interested in is how did you discover that
Bakou: haha
Bakou: is there some like dictionary
Bakou: where you can look up what symbols in C come from what kernel options?
Bakou: that could be useful
shadowsun: kallsyms maybe
shadowsun: I actually found it on a site I translated from Russian
shadowsun: no
shadowsun: that only tells me what symbols ARE there.
monreal: some amazing amd/ati news... If only they would focus on gallium and don't duplicate all the work... but maybe that is something we can finally look forward to in 2011
djura-san: o/
adrian_broher: http://www.gametrailers.com/video/exclusive-co-op-portal-2/703300
meklu: adrian_broher: looks nice
michaellarabel: Linux OpenCL benchmarks going up on phoronix soon
Ivanovic: michaellarabel: wow, what a commit spree from luca barbieri that is nvfx related...
Ivanovic: http://cgit.freedesktop.org/mesa/mesa/log/
michaellarabel: Yeah, Ivanovic, already been writing about it :) Thanks though
Ivanovic: :)
RambJoe: staem for linux confirmed?
RambJoe: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1407096
monreal: RambJoe: more like the opposite
monreal: Q: Final question, and one I'm sure you're not super-keen to answer, but I promised one of our tech guys I'd ask it. What truth is there to rumours that you're also working on a Linux version of Steam?
monreal: Doug Lombardi: There's no Linux version that we're working on right now. ...
monreal: => http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2010-08-12-valve-on-steam-part-two-interview?page=2
RambJoe: but why that hl2.sh file then
monreal: well, why was the WoW client never released for linux
monreal: same thing here I guess
monreal: time for phoronix to apologize
zeroedout: Nintendo has had a habit of denying until official announcements. It's a marketing thing, done to generate buzz. Sounds question-begging, but history has taught us that video game companies do this
Space_Man: maybe they're working on a debian/ubuntu version!
adrian_broher: RambJoe, what is new about this shell script. Wasn't that one around for the mac release in the first place?
RambJoe: yeah but
RambJoe: it was in the css beta update
RambJoe: its just popping up in more places
adrian_broher: well they are updating the games to source 2009(?)
adrian_broher: it's same to assume they're just doing some lazy c&p
adrian_broher: s/same/safe/
smallfoot-: plz package php-gtk and put it in ubuntu repo, so i can use PTS with GUI
Azerthoth|D: dont you think that request should be made of ... oh I dont know, ubuntu
smallfoot-: but they cant do anything
mikeplus64: Eh?
Azerthoth|D: ubuntu cant do anything? well, I'll grant part of that, but putting packages into their repo's, that they can do
Azerthoth|D: as a matter of fact, they are the only ones who can
Bakou: how hard can it be to install one package by yourself
Bakou: especially on ubuntu, everyone caters their install instructions to ubuntu
RambJoe: php-gtk?
smallfoot-: ya
smallfoot-: phoronix-test-suite requires php-gtk for running in graphical user interface mode
smallfoot-: and php-gtk is not in ubuntu repository
jimerickson: smallfoot: http://www.phoronix-test-suite.com/misc/php5-gtk-lucid/ is the location of the .deb package.
Bakou: hey, has anyone been able to successfully run lightsmark on gentoo?
Bakou: in specific with mesa 7.8 and latest ati drivers
Bakou: all it does is screw up my terminal and tell me glut couldnt create a window :\
